PLANETARY RHYTHMS is drummer Prince H. Lawsha's debut album. The dynamic synergy of world rhythms from African, European, and islandic cultures fuses with Lawsha's own inner rhythms. His prior inhalation of gospel, jazz, Latin and R&B now exhales into new breath -- a true panoply of world sounds. Lawsha's music shows no ethnic boundaries. He espouses the concept of synergy first presented by R. Buckminster Fuller twenty-two years ago through his magnum opus, "Synergetics." "The earth is a biosphere of rhythms," says Lawsha, adding, "We must recognize and respect nature's ancient rhythms, embrace and enhance them, and give them back to the earth."

Prince's father is noted jazz saxophonist William "Prince" Lasha (sic), who has played with John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, Sonny Rollins and Sonny Simmons. Lawsha is steeped not only in jazz but in the conviction that "music is the magic of the world." In the eighty's Lawsha's dynamic drumming served as the heartbeat of his popular, versatile band, Quiet Spirit. Lawsha studied with percussionist-extraordinaire Kenneth Nash. That association led to this spirited collaboration. Lawsha praises Nash. "Rhythm master Nash put his heart and soul into all aspects of producing this album, and the listener will hear and feel that!" Nash's high energy and innovative sounds pay no heed to formulas and break out into a superbly syncopated realm all his own. Trumpeter Alain Brunet adds, "Kenneth created a fabulous atmosphere in the session." Max Roach, the seminal pioneer of creative drumming, also mentored Lawsha. In fact, the album was conceived during a sound check when Lawsha worked with Max Roach's band in Europe. And Roach's esteem for Lawsha is clear, "Prince is one of the most sincere and honest persons I've ever met. His dedication and sensitivity impress me. He has his finger on the pulse and style of dealing with percussion and music itself. He has something of his own to portray and it fits in with how he thinks about people -- warmly!"
